HMRC announces a wave of new taskforces to investigate evasion in specific commercial and geographical sectors

Tackling tax evading restaurants

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has revealed that a new taskforce will be tackling tax evading restaurants in the Midlands as part of a wider initiative to increase tax revenues in the UK.

It is hoped that the new project will result in an additional £5 million being raised by HMRC.

The taskforce will visit traders that it deems “high risk” in order to examine their records and carry out other investigations.

Similar programmes in other parts of the country have seen some unannounced visits on restaurants resulting in the arrest of some of the restaurant owners themselves.

Criminal Prosecutions

Mike Eland, HMRC’s Director General Enforcement and Compliance, said: “If you have paid all your taxes you have nothing to worry about. But deliberately evading tax you should be paying can land you with not only a heavy fine but possibly a criminal prosecution as well.

“This is not an empty threat – HMRC can and will track you down if you choose to break the rules.”

Restaurateurs wishing to seek the assistance of a specialist accountancy service should contact Simon Nock in order to arrange a free and confidential meeting.
